Accountabilities:
- Lead the Secure Build and SCS Services teams, taking ownership of delivery, team health, professional growth, performance, hiring, retention, and operational excellence across both groups.
- Build a coherent portfolio plan across two distinct roadmaps, making priorities, capacity, trade-offs, risks, and dependencies explicit while ensuring neither team becomes a secondary priority.
- Partner with Product and other stakeholders to shape strategy and roadmaps spanning secure build infrastructure, developer security services, hardened software artifacts, and connected platform capabilities.
- Stay sufficiently close to technical work to contribute meaningfully to architecture discussions, design and code reviews, production incidents, and selected hands-on initiatives where leadership involvement provides additional leverage.
- Guide technical direction collaboratively with Staff and senior engineers while maintaining clear decision ownership and avoiding unnecessary micromanagement.
- Establish strong interfaces between the teams, including service contracts, trust boundaries, data quality, versioning, operational ownership, and customer-facing failure handling.
- Balance product delivery with reliability investments, inherited systems, on-call responsibilities, observability, and initiatives that reduce recurring operational pain.
- Coach and develop engineers, address performance challenges directly, build succession depth, and create an environment where senior technical talent can expand its impact.
- Coordinate effectively with Product, Design, Security, content, registry, platform, sales, support, commercial, and legal stakeholders while protecting engineering teams from unnecessary churn.
- Promote disciplined use of AI-assisted engineering practices and communicate priorities, decisions, risks, and progress clearly across European and US working hours.
- During the first 30 days, build relationships across both teams, understand their products and production environments, and map dependencies, trust boundaries, and ownership.
- Within the first 90 days, establish a sustainable operating cadence, leadership coverage, portfolio plan, capacity allocation, and clear escalation paths while initiating meaningful improvements for both teams.
- Over the first year, help both teams deliver predictably, strengthen secure-build and security capabilities, improve customer outcomes, and establish sustainable operational ownership.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 5 years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams, with meaningful responsibility across multiple teams or distinct technical domains.
- At least 8 years of professional hands-on software engineering experience in backend engineering, infrastructure, platforms, developer tooling, or related areas.
- Demonstrated experience leading, developing, hiring, and retaining experienced engineers, including managing teams you did not originally build and handling challenging performance situations.
- A leader-first management approach combined with sufficiently current technical judgment to participate credibly in design and architecture discussions across unfamiliar systems.
- Strong experience prioritizing competing roadmaps, operational demands, stakeholder commitments, and engineering capacity.
- Solid understanding of backend and distributed systems, including APIs, event-driven architectures, data stores, cloud-native infrastructure, and production operations.
- Experience with CI or build-system concepts, containers, artifact workflows, and a strong interest in software supply-chain security, trust boundaries, and secure infrastructure.
- Experience leading teams responsible for production systems, including on-call operations, incident response, observability, service-level objectives, and reliability improvement.
- Strong product judgment and a track record of shaping roadmaps collaboratively with Product rather than simply executing predefined requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, cross-functional influence, customer orientation, and the ability to lead effectively across European and US time zones.
- Helpful but not required: experience with Go, Clojure, Kafka, Spanner, Datomic, OCI, BuildKit, Buildx, GitHub Actions, sandboxing, microVMs, multi-tenant infrastructure, or comparable technologies.
- Familiarity with software supply-chain security concepts and technologies such as SLSA, in-toto, SBOMs, VEX, Sigstore, cosign, provenance, signing, or vulnerability scanning is advantageous.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems while simultaneously delivering new capabilities for developer tools, security products, regulated customers, or software-agent workflows is a plus.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote-first environment with strong autonomy, accountability, adaptability, and organizational judgment.
- Visa sponsorship may be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on business needs.
